Madonna Tries, Mostly Fails to Defend Aretha Franklin Tribute at the VMAs

The Material Girl went ahead on Monday night and earned herself a new nickname:

The Narcissistic, Disrespectful, Rambling Woman Who Managed to Screw Up a Tribute to Arguably the Greatest Singer of All-Time.

It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it does sum up what transpired yesterday evening at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

Prior to presenting the award for Video of the Year (which went to Camila Cabello), the 60-year old singer was asked to talk about Aretha Franklin, who died last Thursday at the age of 73.

But instead of saying nice things about this iconic artist, Madonna told a rambling story about, well… herself.

You see, a long time ago, Madonna was struggling to make it as a dancer, so she went to a musical theater audition with a group of French producers.

“Why not?” she thought at the time, telling this long story on stage in front of a consued crowd and adding:

“The worst that can happen is I can go back to getting robbed, held at gunpoint, and being mistaken for a prostitute in my third-floor walk-up that was also a crack house.”

Okay, sure. Yeah. Tell us more, Madge…

It turned out that Madonna nailed the dance portion of the audition yet she panicked when those in charge asked her to produce sheet music and sing.

She wasn’t prepared for such a request!

“I had to think fast. My next meal was on the line,” she said, finally bringing this winding tale back to the late subject at suppose hand:

“Fortunately, one of my favorite albums was Lady Soul by Aretha Franklin. I blurted out, ‘You Make Me Feel!’ Silent. ‘You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman!’”

So… Madonna sang this famous song, the producers loved it, but she actually didn’t get the gig.

She did get a job in Paris as a result of the audition, though, and… SIGH.

You really need to just watch clips from this convoluted, self-serving speech below:

How did an Aretha Franklin tribute end up being a story all about Madonna’s early years as an entertainer?

Simple, Madonna explained in a follow-up Instagram post: This was never supposed to be a tribute!

“I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin!” wrote Madonna as a caption to a photo (below) of her and Cabello.

Continued Madonna in her own defense:

“I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her!

“That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment.”

Madonna did conclude her speech at the VMAs by stating:

None of this would have happened, could have happened without our Lady of Soul. She led me to where I am today.

And I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight. I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Not very apologetic in her Instagram post, Madonna slammed her critics and reiterated her affection for Franklin, closing her statement as follows:

“Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

“I Love Camilla! Congrats! I LOVE my dress! AND. I love-L O V E!! and there is nothing anyone can say or do that will change that.”

Well… okay then!

We guess that settles that.

Madonna loves Aretha. And Cabello. And her own fashion taste. And love in general.

And, let’s not forget what Madonna also loves most of all, even in the wake of maybe the most influential artist in history passing away.

Mark Zuckerberg: I Didn’t MEAN to Defend Holocaust Deniers!

Remember in late 2016 when it looked like Mark Zuckerberg was testing the waters for an eventual Presidential run? That ship has clearly sailed.

In a recent statement, Zuckerberg seemed to make excuses for Holocaust deniers on Facebook, claiming that the classic neo-nazi talking point is just an honest misunderstanding.

Now, he’s trying to walk back his statements … but not doing a great job of it.

On a Wednesday appearance on the Recode Decode podcast, Mark Zuckerberg reminds listeners: “I’m Jewish.”

That is definitely relevant to the conversation of Holocaust denial and other abhorrent content that spreads via Facebook.

“And there’s a set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened,” Zuckerberg admits.

“I find that deeply offensive,” he says.

For the record, saying that Holocaust denial is offensive kind of misses the point.

‘But at the end of the day,” Zuckerberg continues. “I don’t believe that our platform should take that down.”

He does explain his point of view.

Zuckerberg says that he doesn’t want to block thta content “because I think there are things that different people get wrong. I don’t think that they’re intentionally getting it wrong.”

Some would argue that people who believe evil, untrue things are never intentionally getting it wrong. Other say that most Holocaust deniers are deliberately lying.

“It’s hard to impugn intent,” Zuckerberg says. “And to understand the intent.”

Many would say that the intention behind spreading such misinformation doesn’t really matter.

“I just think, as abhorrent as some of those examples are,” Zuckerberg says. “I think the reality is also that I get things wrong when I speak publicly.”

Zuckerberg sent a follow-up email to clarify his wildly controversial statements.

“I enjoyed our conversation yesterday,” his email begins. “But there’s one thing I want to clear up.”

A lot of people are better-spoken in emails than they are in interviews.

“I personally find Holocaust denial deeply offensive,” Zuckerberg repeats. “And I absolutely didn’t intend to defend the intent of people who deny that.”

That’s … reassuring?

“Our goal with fake news is not to prevent anyone from saying something untrue,” he clarifies. “But to stop fake news and misinformation spreading across our services.”

That sounds like a subtle distinction for those who don’t actively work in social media.

He goes on to explain how he hopes that Facebook will accomplish this goal.

“If something is spreading and is rated false by fact checkers,” Zuckerberg describes. “It would lose the vast majority of its distribution in News Feed.”

“And of course,” Zuckerberg continues. “If a post crossed line into advocating for violence or hate against a particular group, it would be removed.”

That is probably welcome news to the people who have reported direct threats against them on Facebook only to have Facebook respond with the formal equivalent of a shrug.

“These issues are very challenging,” Zuckerberg admits. “But I believe that often the best way to fight offensive bad speech is with good speech.”

“I look forward to catching up again soon,” he concludes. “Mark.”

There are a few issues with his statement.

First of all, addressing direct and explicit violent threats just allows people to play word games. Holocaust denial is a popular word game.

A number of white supremacist groups enjoy presenting the Holocaust as a fabrication, concocted by an all-powerful Jewish cabal in order to procure international sympathy.

Zuckerberg himself is unlikely to be impacted by the spread of anti-semitism, because his status as a billionaire means that he does not face the everyday experiences that non-billionaire minorities do.

And that goes for his entire family.

He might be offended by their rhetoric, but he is not the person who is likely to have his home or place of work vandalized by someone who worked themselves into a frenzy after consuming hour after hour of conspiracy theories.

Many have pointed out that Zuckerberg cares more about making money off of avowed racists on his platform than he is about the real world consequences of helping nazi ideology to spread.

In Zuckerberg’s defense … he’s not the best at public speaking.

Also, YouTube’s video suggestion algorithm, which points so many teens to a cesspool of conspiracy theoriest and white nationalist media, is definitely worse.

Still … defending Holocaust deniers isn’t a great platform for a political run. Unless you’re Trump, apparently.

Blac Chyna: I Only Beat Up Rob Kardashian to Defend Myself!

Even though they never actually got married or owned much property together, Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna’s breakup has been anything but easy.

There’s the custody dispute, plus lawsuits on both sides. Among other things, Rob Kardashian — with Kylie’s help — is suing Blac Chyna for her alleged violence against Rob.

Well, Blac Chyna claims that she was only violent in self-defense, and wants the suit thrown out.

Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian both accuse each other of drug-fueled violence. Lovely.

You know, if we believed classist stereotypes, we’d say that these antics sound like they’d be happening in a trailer park and not between millionaires in a southern California mansion.

But domestic violence, accusations, and drugs don’t know any socio economic boundaries, folks.

Rich people are just better at keeping it quiet.

So, Blac Chyna is demanding $ 10 million from Rob Kardashian.

Or, more accurately, from his family. Because we all know that Rob, though he’s a Kardashian, doesn’t exactly have the net worth of even the “poorest” of his sisters.

In fact, Rob may be too broke to pay Blac Chyna.

That gives the rest of the Kardashians some extra incentive to help out their brother.

So, Rob Kardashian accused Chyna of choking him with a phone charger cord and of beating him.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the alleged fight happened at Kylie Jenner’s house (a house, which Rob was renting) … and resulted in about $ 100,000 worth of damages.

We’re talking about destroyed phone, a destroyed television, and damage to doors and walls … all allegedly caused by Blac Chyna.

Now, just because Blac Chyna is 5-foot-2 doesn’t negate the possibility that she could commit domestic violence and property damage.

The question is: did she do it?

According to court documents viewed by RadarOnline, Blac Chyna doesn’t seem to be denying that she was in some way violent with Rob.

(While not necessarily admitting to everything that Rob and Kylie accuse her of doing)

Instead, she’s taking an affirmative defense — claiming that she only took action in order to defend herself.

(And, according to the legal language of the suit, she may or may not have been taking action to defend someone else)

Chyna is trying to dismiss the suit against her over this December 16th, 2016 incident.

Some might be eager to sit back and find entertainment in this situation.

Neither Rob nor Chyna project a very likable image — especially in this context. Many believe that Chyna got pregnant on purpose to create a financial tie to a wealthy family.

Many believe that Rob is gross, and his revenge porn attack against Chyna over the summer pretty much confirms that.

So, if you can’t stand either of them, it’s easy to just look the other way and hope that they both ruin each other’s lives.

Maybe you believe that it’s what they deserve.

Even if you don’t feel sorry for Kylie for having been caught in the middle of whatever happened between this former couple (because honestly, what’s $ 100,000 to Kylie? Proportionately to her wealth, that’s a drop in the bucket), you should worry about this situation.

Because, whether it was an accident or the result of a soap opera-style scheme, Blac Chyna and Rob had Dream together.

That baby daughter is a true innocent, and can’t help but be caught in the middle as her parents go to war in the courtroom.

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello Defend Marriage, SLAM Haters on Instagram

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello would like to make something very clear:

Not only do they comprise a great looking couple, but they are doing just great as a couple as well.

Thanks for not even bothering to ask!

The latest issue of Star Magazine alleges that the Modern Family star was “caught cheating in Rome” and has been spotted on numerous occasions without her wedding ring on.

The cover also screams, in all capital letters, that the marriage between Vergera and Manganiello is “OVER!”

Is it really, though?

In an angry Instagram post, Vergara blasted these infidelity claims, stating that the tabloid Photoshopped the image in which it detailed how her finger was lacking a ring.

“The editor of this magazine is an idiot,” the actress wrote simply, going on and on as follows:

“If he is going to have my ring removed to create fake ‘news,’ he should have made sure that he removed from social media all the other pictures of that award night in Rome where I’m wearing it.

“By the way, that’s my friend, the producer of the movie Bent, that I was shooting in Rome and who came to spend Easter at my home the week later.

“#Starmagazinebullies #goinventsh*itaboutyourmother.”

Wait… a supermarket tabloid twisted a harmless photograph to make it appear scandalous?

It used Photoshop? It flat-out lied?

Wow. Tell us more.

And that’s exactly what Manganiello himself has done.

The former True Blood star has issued his own spirited post on Instagram, slamming this same cover story and expressing love for his wife.

“Big surprise everyone but Star created a fake story and then photo shopped my wife’s engagement ring off of her finger in order to sell magazines,” he wrote.

“They are run by malicious trash. Do the world a favor and don’t buy their garbage.”

We agree!

Just visit The Hollywood Gossip instead!

We do not charge a thing to read our celebrity news stories and we (mostly) guarantee that they are never fake.

The 40-year-old actor was mostly known for his amazing body and handsome face prior to falling for Vergara.

He opened up in the April issue of Ocean Drive magazine about being a part of a famous twosome these days.

“I was never part of a celebrity couple before this, because I never wanted to go through the difficulty that can bring in terms of paparazzi and attention,” he said at the time.

“The two of us knew that once it became public that we were together — and we had conversations about how that would change a lot of thing.

“[Vergara] is the only woman on the planet that I was willing to go through all of that for, because she’s the greatest.”

Everyone together now: AWWWWWW!

Manganiello added that the attention hasn’t harmed their relationship at all.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

“All that pressure has just brought us closer together,” he says.

“It’s not something that we welcome into our lives. We try to stay private.

“At the end of the day, it’s really nobody else’s business but ours. It’s just that I love her and she loves me and here we are. And there is a price for that when living in the public eye.”
